About
IC Cards

A card with an embedded IC (Integrated Circuit) is called an IC card.
IC cards are not only more secure, but provide more functionality as well.
When renewing your JCB card, we will be progressively rolling out IC cards.

The Difference Between IC Cards and Regular Credit Cards

The method that an IC card uses to store information is completely different from traditional credit cards. Traditional credit cards use magnetic tape to store information, but an IC card uses a powerful, large capacity embedded IC chip to store a large amount of information directly on the card. Plus, an IC chip can perform mathematical calculations, enabling the card itself to perform many calculations just like a computer can. Furthermore, cards containing an IC chip are difficult to counterfeit and decrypt, making them a much more secure choice.

At any JCB merchant that has an IC card compatible terminal, you no longer need to sign anything like you did with your traditional credit cards. Instead, now all you need is to input your secret PIN number to verify your identity. This makes shopping with your credit card much safer and a lot easier.

It is extremely important that you choose a PIN number that cannot easily be guessed by anyone else.

To modify/view your PIN number take your JCB card to your JCB card issuer.

At JCB merchants that do not have an IC card compatible terminal, you will be asked for your signature just as if you had a traditional non-IC card. You may also still be asked for your signature even at JCB merchants with an IC card compatible terminal.

PIN entry may not be required for contactless payment.

IC Cards Enable
a Variety of Services

Thanks to the computational and storage abilities of IC cards, a variety of functions can be provided just by the card itself. In addition to standard credit and cashing services, IC cards can be used for ETC, point services, electronic passenger tickets, electronic money, and many other services. Integration with the Internet, BS/CS digital broadcasting, mobile phones, mobile terminals, and other interfaces are also possible.
We at JCB plan to use the knowledge we have gained over the years of dealing with IC cards and provide our customers with a variety of services that they desire in addition to the basic credit services.

Certification of IC Cards

Certification of IC Cards

The requirements and procedures for conducting JCB Contactless IC Card Approval are described in documents distributed by JCB after vendors have agreed to JCB's pre-requisite agreement.
Once distributed by JCB, please refer to the IC Card Approval documents. A Letter of Approval will be issued to vendors whose products pass the tests.

The specification [JCB Card 3.X] is designed for both contact and contactless transactions. The required tests for the Approval Test Program differ depending on the interface supported by the Product. The required tests are shown in the table.
JCB will issue a Letter of Approval to a Vendor when a Product submitted by the Vendor passes all the required tests, and meets the standards established by JCB.
